The 7 most frequent asked questions about metal clay Art Clay Silver

1. What is Art Clay Silver?

Art Clay Silver is a clay like material, that consists of small silver particles, water and an organic binder.

It is similar to polymer clay when wet and can easily be formed, moulded, textured and cut.

When the water has evaporated, you can file and drill it and construct more complex pieces. Then you have to sinter your piece at a temperature of at least 650°C to obtain real silver.

2. What types of Art Clay Silver are there?

There are two types of Art Clay Silver: 999 and 950, representing two different standards of silver.

Finished pieces made with Art Clay 999 will be 99.9% Silver (fine silver), pieces made with Art Clay 950 will be 95% silver and 5% copper (Sterling silver).

3. What type of Art Clay is best for my project: 950 or 999?

Fine silver is relatively soft, Sterling silver is harder and more resistant to kinetic stress.

Art Clay Silver 999 can be fired both, in an electric kiln and with a handheld torch, whereas Art Clay Silver 950 needs an electric kiln for firing.

Which clay to choose depends, thus, on the intended use and the available firing tool.

For jewellery, that is not objected to a lot of stress, like e.g. pendants or earrings, fine silver works great. Rings, though, receive lot more stress. While it is possible to make wider and thicker rings with Art Clay Silver 999, the additional stability of Art Clay 950 is needed for open and more delicate designs. For bracelets, we recommend only Art Clay Silver 950.

4. Does Art Clay Silver shrink?

Yes. Art Clay Silver shrinks during drying and, mainly, during firing. when the water and the binder are gone, the silver particles move closer together.

Art Clay Silver 999 shrinks about 8-8%, Art Clay Silver 950 shrinks about 10-13%.

6. How can I fire Art Clay Silver?

Art Clay Silver 999 can be fired both, in an electric kiln and with a handheld torch, whereas Art Clay Silver 950 needs an electric kiln for firing.

When using an electric kiln, we recommend firing the pieces longer and hotter than the minimum temperature and period to get a higher stability. If possible, fire them at 900°C for 2 hours.

7. What happens after firing?

After firing, your piece will have a white surface. Polish it with a brass brush to compact the surface and the beautiful silver shine will appear. For the final finish, you can use pro polishing pads and, if you like a silver polishing cream. You can polish the edges and raised parts of the texture with an agate or a steel polisher.

Use a patina to intensify the contrast of your texture.
